Sighting Tips
The best time for bird photography is during the golden hours—early morning and late afternoon. Approach slowly and use a long lens to respect the birds' space while capturing fine details. Check the tides for salt marsh sightings.

Where to Spot Them
Matagorda Bay's diverse landscape offers prime viewing opportunities — from the salt marshes at the mouth of the Tres Palacios River to the coastal flats of the bay, each species finds its unique sanctuary. For the best sightings, we recommend early morning visits to the trails at Matagorda Bay Nature Park or the Palacios Waterfront during low tide.
Coastal Salt Marshes
Ideal for spotting Great Blue Herons and Roseate Spoonbills wading in the shallow tidal pools.
Palacios Waterfront
Scan the bay for Brown Pelicans, Ospreys, night-herons, shorebirds, and ducks, plus several species of terns diving for fish along the seawall.
