Matagorda Bay sits right on the Central Flyway, one of North America's major migratory bird corridors, and it's rare in that so many habitats collide in one small area: Gulf coastline, salt marshes, coastal prairie, river bottomland, and forest, all within a few miles of each other. That mix is exactly why the birds show up in such numbers, and the Texas Legislature made it official by naming Matagorda County the state's designated Birding Capital of Texas.
